Mediterranean Highlights While Cruising with Virgin Voyages

This summer, I embarked on an unforgettable Mediterranean cruise with Virgin Voyages that was nothing short of spectacular. You can read all about my review of their Scarlet Lady ship here! From the moment we set sail from the vibrant city of Barcelona to our final stop in the lively island of Ibiza, every destination offered its own unique charm, culture, and breathtaking scenery. If you’re considering a Mediterranean escape, here’s why you should sail with Virgin Voyages and a roundup of the incredible destinations we explored.

Why Virgin Voyages Stands Out

Before we dive into the destinations, it’s worth mentioning what makes Virgin Voyages so unique. They are all about redefining the cruising experience with a focus on adult-only voyages, sustainable practices, and a sense of adventure that appeals to the modern traveler. The ships themselves are designed to feel more like a boutique hotel on the sea rather than a traditional cruise ship. From chic, contemporary cabins to a variety of dining options that rival the best on land, everything is curated with care. There are no buffets, no formal dress codes, and absolutely no kids. The relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere made me feel like I was on a true vacation!

Barcelona: Where the Journey Begins

Our adventure began in the enchanting city of Barcelona, a place that perfectly blends history, culture, and modern flair. Barcelona served as both our embarkation and disembarkation point, giving us ample time to soak in its vibrant energy. The city is a feast for the senses, with its unique architecture, mouthwatering cuisine, and lively streets.

Of course, no visit to Barcelona is complete without exploring the works of Antoni Gaudí. The iconic Sagrada Família is as awe-inspiring as ever, with its intricate facades and towering spires. Park Güell, another Gaudí masterpiece, offers panoramic views of the city, and its colorful mosaics are a joy to behold. For an even more historic experience, I recommend wandering through the Gothic Quarter, where narrow, winding streets lead to hidden squares and historic landmarks like the Barcelona Cathedral. Marseille: A Gateway to Provence

Our first port of call was Marseille, France’s oldest city and a melting pot of cultures. While Marseille itself has plenty to offer from picturesque old port, stunning basilicas, and a vibrant arts scene, we chose to venture a bit further afield to explore the Provençal countryside. Just a short drive from Marseille, Aix-en-Provence is a charming town known for its elegant architecture, tree-lined boulevards, and bustling markets.

The town’s rich history is evident in its well-preserved buildings, including the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles. The town’s relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make it a perfect place to unwind and enjoy a leisurely afternoon.

The Elegance of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a stunning villa perched on the French Riviera. Built by the wealthy heiress Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild in the early 1900s, the villa is a masterpiece of French art and architecture.

The villa’s gardens are nothing short of spectacular, with nine distinct themes ranging from a formal French garden to a tranquil Japanese garden. Each one is meticulously maintained and offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. As you wander through the gardens, you’ll encounter fountains, sculptures, and fragrant blooms, all set against the backdrop of the azure waters. The villa itself is equally impressive, with its opulent interiors filled with art, antiques, and decorative objects from around the world. It’s easy to see why this place has been a source of inspiration for so many artists and writers over the years.

The Timeless Charm of Èze

Next on our itinerary was the medieval village of Èze, perched high above the French Riviera. This enchanting village feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow, winding streets, stone buildings, and breathtaking views of the coastline. Èze is famous for its exotic garden, which is home to a variety of cacti, succulents, and other rare plants. The garden is perched on the highest point of the village, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean that are simply unforgettable. Wandering through Èze, you’ll find charming boutiques, art galleries, and cozy cafes tucked away in every corner. The village’s peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery make it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas along the coast.

Ibiza: The Island of Contrasts

Our final stop was the iconic island of Ibiza, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches. But there’s more to Ibiza than just its party scene. The island is a place of contrasts, where ancient history meets modern luxury. We spent our time exploring the old town of Ibiza, known as Dalt Vila, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and impressive fortifications make it a fascinating place to explore. The views from the top of Dalt Vila are breathtaking, with the sparkling Mediterranean stretching out before you.

For those looking to indulge in the island’s nightlife, Ibiza offers some of the best clubs in the world, but there are also plenty of options for a more laid-back evening which is always my preference. We loved our sunset cocktails on the rooftop of the luxurious Gran Hotel Montesol Ibiza. It was the perfect way to enjoy the summer evening and end our last full day of this Mediterranean cruise.

Sailing the Mediterranean with Virgin Voyages was an experience like no other. From the vibrant streets of Barcelona to the tranquil gardens of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, every destination offered its own unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Virgin Voyages made the journey seamless and luxurious, with their focus on delivering a cruise experience that’s both sophisticated and fun. So, if you’re dreaming of sun-soaked days, enchanting destinations, and a cruise experience that goes beyond the ordinary, I highly recommend Virgin Voyages for your next great adventure!
